NURS 4540 - Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing


This course prepares nursing students to apply advanced clinical judgment and pathophysiological knowledge in the provision of holistic, person-centered care within the high-acuity medical-surgical setting. Utilizing evidence-based practice, students will integrate the latest research to make informed clinical decisions in the management of complex patients. The course fosters leadership skills essential for delivering high-quality nursing care, promoting a culture of patient safety, preventing complications, and advocating for patients’ needs. Students will develop professional behaviors reflecting cultural sensitivity, diversity, and cost-effective care strategies. Through effective communication and collaboration with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team, students will enhance their ability to foster mutual respect and shared values. The course emphasizes the application of ethical, legal, and Christian principles in accordance with nursing standards, ensuring compassionate and ethical care. Additionally, students will apply teaching and learning principles to educate patients and their families on health promotion, illness prevention, and management in complex medical-surgical settings. Three lecture hours per week and 90 clinical hours. This course is eligible for honors credit.
