BIOL 2430/2430L - Fundamentals in Microbiology for Nurses This seven-week course covers concepts of clinical microbiology necessary for nursing students using virtual and at home laboratory exercises. Topics include history of microbiology, the study of bacteria as it pertains to infectious disease and treatment including microbial habitat, metabolism, genetics, and host interactions in health and disease. Students will learn the principles of prevention and control of infectious diseases caused by microbial pathogens such as bacteria and viruses, the development of the disease process, treatment, and bacterial drug resistance. Students will learn how the body responds to protect from future disease emphasizing innate and adaptive immune responses. The laboratory portion includes virtual lab simulations and at-home laboratory kits to explore techniques for isolating, identifying, and controlling microbial growth necessary for understanding how pathogens are identified and treated in the clinical setting. This course is designed for students taking prerequisite coursework for the ABSN hybrid nursing program. Six hours of lecture and six hours of laboratory per week. This course cannot be applied to a degree outside the College of Nursing.
