SWK 3100 - Social Welfare Policy and Services This course provides an examination of the historical and philosophical issues that have shaped social welfare. Special attention will be given to the emergence of social welfare institutions, the role and function of social welfare, including social justice in society, and the development of the profession of social work. The social, political, economic forces and values that have influenced the development of society’s response to human need will also be examined.
Focus will be given to the formulation, analysis, and implementation of social welfare policy at local, state, and national levels and to examine the global impact of policy. Issues in policy analysis and evaluation will be explored especially as they relate to minorities, women, children, immigrants or other diverse populations. Students will learn how to impact the policy process at the legislative level in an effort to promote social justice.
