NURS 3540 - Gerontological Nursing


This course enhances nursing skills and knowledge for effectively caring for the aging population. It emphasizes the development of therapeutic communication strategies to build and sustain compassionate relationships with older adults and their caregivers. Students will learn to use critical thinking to integrate comprehensive geriatric assessment data into introductory-level care plans. The curriculum also covers theoretical frameworks related to aging. It addresses the multicultural needs of the elderly, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure safe, high-quality, and cost-effective care. The course focuses on health education, where students will apply elder-specific teaching principles to improve patient safety, address socioeconomic factors, and promote overall wellness. Ethical considerations will be integrated throughout the course to guide and advocate for patient care with respect and compassion in diverse healthcare settings. Additionally, the course aims to cultivate a professional nursing identity rooted in servanthood and Christian principles, reinforcing the values of integrity and empathy in all interactions with the aging population. Two lecture hours per week.
