Music Major (BM)

The expected Program Learning Outcomes for this major are:

Students will be able to:

• demonstrate the ability to hear, identify, analyze, and work effectively with the elements of music, and explore creative processes, such as composition or improvisation; and students pursuing the concentration in composition will demonstrate more advanced skills in composition, orchestration, and the like.
• demonstrate a proficient level of piano skills, including technique, harmonization, transposition, and sight-reading.
• demonstrate an understanding of performance techniques associated with different musical styles at levels appropriate to their individual areas of study, needs, and interests through solo, chamber, and ensemble musical performances.
• demonstrate a familiarity with principal musical eras, key composers and music literature from a variety of styles such as classical, jazz, popular and world music.
• demonstrate the ability to think, speak, and write articulately and effectively about music and other related fields that are appropriate to their areas of study; and students pursuing the concentration in entrepreneurship will demonstrate more advanced skills in business, advertising, communication media, and the like.
