The expected Program Learning Outcomes for this major are:
- The ability to:
- play simple musical scores or parts at the keyboard.
- read music at the keyboard and on their primary instrument.
- perform a variety of repertoire on their primary instrument with advanced technical and interpretative skills.
- use an understanding of common Western theory practices to compose, notate, arrange, orchestrate, and analyze music.
- understand and think critically regarding significant genres, composers, and styles in Western music.
- work as a leader and collaborator in music ensembles with high levels of conducting and rehearsal skills.
- teach effectively in the music classroom and studio with advanced factual and pedagogical knowledge and understanding.
- develop and defend musical judgments.
- hear, identify, and work conceptually with the elements of music such as rhythm, melody, harmony, structure, timbre, texture.
- perform in a principal area with confidence and appropriate ability.
