ENG 5110 - American Novel

This course explores the emergence and development of the American novel. Students will read and analyze several works by major American novelists, beginning with the mid-19th century and concluding with contemporary novelists. Students will read and analyze novels as literary texts, paying attention to spiritual, aesthetic, historical, intellectual, and political contexts as well. Course readings often are chosen to fulfill a semester long theme, and themes and authors vary semester to semester. Authors previously covered include Herman Melville, Henry James, Theodore Dreiser, Willa Cather, Edith Wharton, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, John Updike, Thomas Pynchon, Toni Morrison, Marilynne Robinson, Cormac McCarthy, and Tim O'Brien. Course may be repeated with the consent of the department chair.
