ENG 4080 - Studies in Short Fiction

The short story is one of the greatest but most overlooked narrative forms. This course will focus on short fiction from a variety of cultures in the context of historical developments in the genre. Students will carefully read, analyze, and evaluate stories and see the way stories both reflect and enhance our understanding of life. Students will study generic conventions and critical perspectives while learning to appreciate the craft involved in not only writing individual short stories, but also in creating short story collections and short story cycles. Specific authors and stories vary from year to year, so the course may be repeated with consent of the department chair. Authors previously covered include Raymond Carver, Anton Chekhov, Sandra Cisneros, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Jhumpa Lahiri, Doris Lessing, Alice Munro, Tim O'Brien, Flannery O'Connor, JD Salinger, and Jean Toomer.
