Music Education Major


The expected Program Learning Outcomes for this major are:

  • The ability to:
    • play simple musical scores or parts at the keyboard.
    • read music at the keyboard and on their primary instrument.
    • perform a variety of repertoire on their primary instrument with advanced technical and interpretative skills.
    • use an understanding of common Western theory practices to compose, notate, arrange, orchestrate, and analyze music.
    • understand and think critically regarding significant genres, composers, and styles in Western music.
    • work as a leader and collaborator in music ensembles with high levels of conducting and rehearsal skills.
    • teach effectively in the music classroom and studio with advanced factual and pedagogical knowledge and understanding.
    • develop and defend musical judgments.
    • hear, identify, and work conceptually with the elements of music such as rhythm, melody, harmony, structure, timbre, texture.
    • perform in a principal area with confidence and appropriate ability.
