Translation Certificate (Graduate)

Program Description

The Certificate in Translation is 18 graduate hours in specific translation topics, including ethics, translation theory, and areas of specialization. It is designed to help students learn and practice skills necessary for translation in the workplace, as a freelance operator, or in service to the community. This program does not include a certification exam, but it is the first step towards a translation career, further specialization, or further higher education in translation. It is designed for students who already have proficiency in another language and want to use their language gifts to help others. Applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree in the non-native language OR have received a rating of Advanced Mid or higher in their non-native language according to the proficiency guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Mission

The mission of the Department of Foreign Languages and International Studies at Harding University is to equip language learners for service in both local and global communities through the development of intercultural competence and effective communication, including translation, in one or more world languages. Our faculty, students, and alumni honor God through their work, including their honesty, integrity, and decisions made with each text.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Certificate in Translation program is determined on an individual basis.

Applicants must:

1. Possess an undergraduate degree in a foreign language or an advanced-mid rating on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview in your non-native language or receive consent of the chair of the department of foreign languages and international studies. Some candidates may not meet the criteria for regular admission but may demonstrate the ability to succeed in the program. Students not meeting admission requirements may still be granted provisional admission with the condition of leveling work in the foreign language or additional testing. Leveling work may include additional language courses at the undergraduate or graduate level at the student’s expense.  Required courses or additional testing will be determined on an individual basis at the discretion of the program director and the department chair. 
2. Meet all general requirements for admission to, and agree to abide by all policies and procedures for, graduate programs at Harding University. Graduate students at Harding are expected to maintain the highest standards of morality, integrity, orderliness, and personal honor. Harding University reserves the right to refuse admittance or dismiss any student whose lifestyle is not consistent with the Christian principles that this University represents.

Application Procedure

1. Complete the online application.
2. Request official transcripts* be sent directly from previous institutions to admissions@harding.edu.
   *Note: Harding alumni and current students do not need to request Harding transcripts as they are on file.
3. Submit the following:
   1. At least two references (one academic)
   2. Upload a current CV or resume
   3. Upload a written 500-1000-word personal statement in both languages of your language pair

Submission of a complete application does not guarantee admission to the Certificate in Translation Program.

The Certificate in Translation Program can be started during the fall, spring, or summer semesters. To begin the program, please submit your applications by the following dates:

• Fall applications: April 1
• Spring applications: September 1
• Summer applications: March 1

Accepted applicants will be notified by email.

Academic Requirements

A minimum GPA of 2.8 is required for completion of the certificate. Students cannot earn more than one C letter grade. Students who do earn  C in multiple classes will have to repeat at least one class. Failure to reduce the number of C letter grades to one class after two semesters of attempts will result in a suspension. Failed courses may be repeated twice. After the third failing attempt, the student will be suspended from the Certificate Program.

A student who has been suspended from the Certificate program may re-enroll with probationary status one full semester (5 months) after the semester in which the suspension occurred.

Program Learning Outcomes

The Department of Foreign Languages has determined official outcomes for translation courses. In all courses, students will:

1. Demonstrate Christ-like characteristics and attitudes in all translating and interpreting interactions, including honesty, respect, and a willingness to serve others.
2. Translate or interpret a variety of texts, incorporating strategies, tools, and theories across multiple situations, including correctly assessing register, purpose, and audience.
3. Identify key concepts in codes of ethics for translating and interpreting and formulate a personal code of ethics to resolve ethical dilemmas encountered during translating/interpreting interactions.
4. Communicate at a professional level through presentation of written analyses and critiques, interpretation of authentic source texts, and translations or interpretations of such texts. 

Curriculum

The Certificate program offers the convenience of 100% online learning and allows for year-round enrollment. The 18-hour certificate program is taught from a Christ-centered perspective and provides a flexible and affordable option for individuals seeking to enhance their language abilities and gain credibility.

Our certificate program focuses on French- or Spanish-to-English translation and equips students with the necessary skills to excel in various professional settings, to work as freelance translators, or to contribute to their communities through translation services.

The curriculum emphasizes essential skills, ethical practices, written communication, creativity, and technological proficiency required for a successful translation career.

Students may take up to two classes per semester. Coursework for the Certificate must be completed within seven years of the start date.
