Foreign Language Major


The expected Program Learning Outcomes for this major are:

  • Students graduating from all programs (any French, Spanish, or International Studies majors) will be able to:
    • demonstrate Christ-like communication or service in a local or global community.
    • communicate at a professional level in the target language through interpersonal conversations, interpretation of complex authentic texts, and presentation of oral and/or written information.
    • use knowledge of cultural perspectives, products, and practices to compare native and target cultures and to demonstrate intercultural competence in response to divergent viewpoints.
    • integrate target-language texts on literary and cultural themes as well as interdisciplinary topics into written or oral presentations, constructing coherent arguments and demonstrating academic integrity in citing multiple sources.
  • Students seeking teacher licensure will ALSO be able to:
    • use understanding of linguistics and the changing nature of language to compare native and target language sounds and structures.
    • plan, implement, and assess learning experiences informed by research in second language acquisition, current standards and best practices for foreign language teaching, and support for all learners.
    • accept the responsibilities inherent in being a professional language educator by participating in ongoing professional development and reflection on practice, by collaborating with others to advocate for foreign language study, and by engaging in ethical interactions with all students and professionals.
