Foreign Language and Missions


The following PLOs from the Center for World Missions will be assessed in required BMIS courses:

  • Students will exhibit an understanding of Scripture, human culture, and communication principles in contextualizing the gospel for diverse audiences globally.
  • Students will demonstrate skill in formulating holistic, strategic, and theologically appropriate responses to human needs in specific cultures.
  • Students will demonstrate verbally and in writing attitudes and understandings required of those called to serve cross-culturally in a compassionate, Christ-like manner.

The following PLOs will be assessed by the Department of Foreign Languages and International Studies:

  • Students will be able to demonstrate Christ-like communication or service in a local or global community.
  • Students will be able to communicate at a professional level in the target language through interpersonal conversations, interpretation of complex authentic texts, and presentation of oral and/or written information.
  • Students will be able to use knowledge of cultural perspectives, products, and practices to compare native and target cultures and to demonstrate intercultural competence in response to divergent viewpoints.
  • Students will be able to integrate target-language texts on literary and cultural themes as well as interdisciplinary topics into written or oral presentations, constructing coherent arguments and demonstrating academic integrity in citing multiple sources.
  • Students will be able to use understanding of linguistics and the changing nature of language to compare native and target language sounds and structures.
  • Students will design and implement their own language learning experience through conversation with native speakers and based on research in second language acquisition.
